Why the right textbook still matters, even in the YouTube era

Free videos are great for building first intuition, but they aren't built to be revisited at 11 PM the night before your exam, indexed for a specific theorem, or trusted enough to settle an argument about which formula applies. A well-chosen textbook does all three — and it does something videos rarely do: it forces you to sit with a hard problem until you actually solve it, not just nod along.

Where a good book earns its price back

  • In GATE CSE and GATE DA — standard reference books are where question-setters draw inspiration from. Solving the exercises at the end of a Devore, Rosen, or CLRS chapter is closer to the real exam than most "practice test" PDFs.
  • In interviews at product companies — when an interviewer at a company like Google, Amazon, or a well-funded AI startup asks you to derive a result, explain a model's assumptions, or design a system from scratch, "I watched a video on it" doesn't hold up the way "I worked through it" does.
  • In PSU recruitment — PSU technical papers lean even more on fundamentals than GATE does. A strong base from a proper textbook transfers directly, instead of forcing you to relearn a subject for every new exam.
  • On the job itself — the gap between "cleared the interview" and "actually productive in the first six months" is almost always fundamentals: the statistics behind a model, the systems thinking behind an architecture decision, the algorithmic intuition behind a performance fix.
