Why this subject matters: Optimization is the mathematical engine behind every machine learning model you will ever train — gradient descent, backpropagation, and hyperparameter tuning are all optimization problems in disguise. It is also a steady GATE scorer, and interviewers at ML-heavy companies will expect you to reason about convexity and convergence, not just recite formulas.
